If you have been losing hair and cannot figure out why, your hormones may be the missing piece. Hormonal imbalances are one of the most common — and most overlooked — drivers of hair thinning in both men and women, and addressing them can make a significant difference in how well any hair restoration treatment works.

Which Hormones Affect Hair Growth?

Several hormones play a direct role in the hair growth cycle. Thyroid hormones regulate the speed of cellular processes throughout the body, including hair follicle activity. When thyroid levels are off — either too high or too low — hair can become brittle, thin, or shed excessively.

Estrogen and progesterone help keep hair in the growth phase longer. When these levels drop — as they do during perimenopause and menopause — hair can thin noticeably, particularly around the crown and temples.

Androgens like DHT (dihydrotestosterone) are the primary driver of androgenetic alopecia, the most common form of pattern hair loss. DHT binds to receptors in hair follicles and gradually miniaturizes them, shortening the growth cycle until the follicle stops producing hair altogether.

Cortisol, the stress hormone, can also disrupt the hair growth cycle when chronically elevated. High cortisol pushes follicles into a resting phase prematurely, leading to increased shedding — a condition known as telogen effluvium.

Signs Your Hair Loss May Be Hormone-Related

Hormone-related hair loss often looks different from other types. You might notice diffuse thinning across the scalp rather than a defined bald spot, increased shedding in the shower or on your pillow, or hair that feels finer and more fragile than it used to. Other symptoms of hormonal imbalance — fatigue, weight changes, mood shifts, irregular cycles, or poor sleep — often accompany the hair loss.

How We Approach It at L.I.V.E. Wellness

At L.I.V.E. Wellness Medspa, we look at the whole picture. Before recommending any hair restoration treatment, we take time to understand your health history, lifestyle, and any symptoms that might point to an underlying hormonal issue. If appropriate, we can coordinate hormone optimization alongside Alma TED hair restoration to address both the surface-level hair loss and the factors contributing to it.

Hormone optimization at our Rocklin medspa is designed to bring your levels back into a healthy range using evidence-based approaches tailored to your individual needs. When your hormones are balanced, your body — including your hair follicles — functions better.

The Bottom Line

Hair loss is rarely just about hair. If you have been struggling with thinning and have not yet had your hormone levels evaluated, that is a worthwhile conversation to have. A consultation with our team is a good place to start — we will listen to your concerns, review your history, and help you understand what is driving your hair loss and what your options are.
